Glossary
Source - A collection of documents in the LexisNexis database, pertaining to the same topic area.
Document - Documents are pieces of information that make up the various sources.
Documents are the results of your query and can vary in length depending upon the source used.
Legal Documents - Documents used primarily by the legal profession to substantiate or research issues of law.
Non-legal Documents - Documents that are not specifically categorized as legal in nature, such as: newspapers,
journals
Statute - A law established by a legislative body.
Code - A system of accepted laws and regulations that govern procedure or behavior in particular
circumstances.
Short Name - Option under the Option 1: Find a Source feature that allows you to use the unique library and source
file name that LexisNexis has assigned a particular source to find that source, instead of having to walk through the
list of libraries.
Long Name - Option under the Option 1: Find a Source feature that allows you to use words that you know are
in the title of a source file, to locate the file on the LexisNexis system without having to walk through the list of
libraries.
Libraries - A collection of legal and non-legal sources comprising the LexisNexis system.
Menu-walk - A method of locating a source by clicking through a hierarchy of libraries and files.
Area of Law - Category of LexisNexis sources that divides information by the type of law covered by the documents
included in the sources which relate to areas of law such as tax, labor and employment, public contracts law, etc.
